Garage Door Repair Costs

If you are planning to install a new garage door, you should first determine your type. Garage doors are made of many parts, but they all have the same purpose: to open and close the garage. There are two types of springs: an extension spring and a torsion spring. The extension spring is suspended above a horizontal track, while the torsion spring is mounted on a shaft with cable drums. The torsion spring must be kept straight and free of any debris to operate the garage door. Otherwise, bumping into the track can result in severe damage.

Typically, replacement parts cost between $50 and $100. Extension springs come in two pieces, and replacement of one spring will cost about $100. Garage doors typically weigh a couple hundred pounds, so they can wear down quickly. When this happens, the garage door hinges need replacement. Replacing one hinge costs about $130 to $150. Each subsequent hinge replacement will cost about $60 to eighty dollars. The cost to replace one hinge can be high, since the replacement requires disassembling and reinstalling the heavy door.

The cost of repairs is also determined by the material of the garage door. The most expensive doors, such as steel, may cost about $135 to $150 per repair. While this may seem like a large sum, many repairs are inexpensive enough for a homeowner to tackle on their own. On the other hand, a dented track may cost as much as $125. In these cases, it may be wise to seek the services of a professional contractor.

One type of door that is quieter than the other two is the screw-driven one. This model is often referred to as “keyless entry” and is a type of digital access control. It has a stationary chain embedded in an overhead rail and a J-arm connected to it. It costs roughly the same as a belt-driven model and comes with a lifetime warranty. If you decide on a direct-drive unit, it is best to invest in a higher quality one.

Another common garage door repair is spring replacement. Torsion springs are a common part of garage doors and need to be replaced at some point. The lifespan of these springs depends on the amount of use they receive every day. Springs usually need replacement after about 10,000 cycles, but if you use your door a lot, they may not last as long. The springs can be corroded by moisture, so be sure to get a high-quality spring.

A steel-door “sandwich” is made of a thick steel outer skin and a light-gauge backing material. Both are very strong, but the latter doesn’t have any customization options. Fiberglass doors are another great choice and can increase your home’s curb appeal. They’re lightweight and require little maintenance, but they are more expensive than wood doors. This is because they are insulated and have a lower R-value.

Another consideration is the material. The doors can be made of wood, fiberglass, aluminum, or steel. The wood look garage doors are the most popular. Steel doors are the strongest and are also available with insulation. But steel garage doors can be dented and are prone to corrosion, particularly if you live in coastal areas. The fiberglass doors are also less susceptible to dents and rust. These materials are primarily used in construction projects, and are usually bonded to a steel frame.
